EMDR Aftercare: Supporting Your Healing Journey

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a powerful and evidence-based approach for processing trauma, painful memories, and emotional distress. While many people experience relief and emotional shifts during sessions, what happens after EMDR is just as important as the therapy itself. Proper aftercare can support your nervous system, reduce overwhelm, and help your brain integrate the changes that have begun.

After an EMDR session, it’s common to feel tired, emotionally tender, or more aware of memories or body sensations. This is a normal part of healing as your brain continues processing beneath the surface. Gentle self-care helps you stay grounded and supported.

Simple aftercare practices may include:

Rest and hydration – Your brain has done deep neurological work, so prioritising sleep, water, and nourishment is key.

Journaling – Writing down emotions, dreams, or bodily sensations can help you stay aware of changes and track progress.

Grounding activities – Calm walks, mindfulness, breathing exercises, or sensory grounding help regulate your nervous system.

Avoiding overwhelming demands – Give yourself space. You don’t need to be productive right away. Slow, gentle pacing is okay.

Reach out for support – Contact your therapist if you notice emotional intensity, intrusive thoughts, or if you simply need reassurance between sessions.

Healing isn’t linear, and EMDR aftercare helps you hold the progress you’re making with strength and compassion.
